Ultimate Guide to Diamond Cut Alloy Refurbishment

There’s something undeniably satisfying about a freshly refurbished set of diamond-cut alloys — that flawless shine, those crisp reflections, and that feeling of driving away on wheels that look brand new. But behind that mirror finish lies a surprisingly intricate process — part science, part craftsmanship.

Let’s take a look at what actually goes on behind the scenes when your alloys come in for a full diamond cut refurbishment.

1. Removal and Inspection

First things first: the wheels are removed from the car and the tyres are taken off. Each wheel is carefully inspected for buckles, cracks, or damage. Any structural issue has to be addressed before we move forward — safety always comes first.
At this stage, new valves are also fitted, ensuring a proper seal when the tyres go back on later.

2. Stripping and Sandblasting

Next, the wheel goes through a chemical stripping process to remove any old paint, lacquer, or residue.
Once stripped, it’s sandblasted to clean the surface thoroughly and prepare it for repair and coating. This gives us a fresh, clean base to work on.

3. TIG Welding and Repairs

If there’s any material missing or curb damage that needs attention, our specialists step in with TIG welding. This precise technique restores the original shape and strength of the rim. After welding, the wheel is carefully reshaped and smoothed out, ready for the next stage.

4. Degassing and Primer Coating

The wheel then goes through a degassing oven, which removes any trapped gases from the alloy — a vital step to prevent bubbling during powder coating.
Once cooled, we apply a powder coat primer, then bake it to create a smooth and durable foundation.

5. Basecoat and Colour Choice

Here’s where the magic happens. We apply the basecoat, which can be the original manufacturer finish or a custom colour of your choice.
This layer is baked once again, locking in the pigment and giving that deep, rich tone.

6. Powder Lacquer and Polishing

After the basecoat, the wheels receive a layer of powder lacquer, then baked to seal everything in. Once cooled, the surface is machine-cut (the “diamond cut” itself) to achieve that signature two-tone metallic finish.
Finally, we buzz back polish the surface to perfection — that mirror shine you can almost see your reflection in.

7. Tyres, Balancing and Refit

With the refurb complete, the tyres are refitted, balanced, and the wheels are mounted back on your car.
The result? A set of alloys that look brand new — well, almost.

Why Refurb Instead of Replace?

Refurbishing diamond-cut alloys not only saves you money but also reduces waste and keeps your car looking factory-fresh. It’s a smart, sustainable, and satisfying way to restore your wheels to their original glory.
